What Are Nutrient Credits?

Nutrient Credits (NC) are digital assets representing verified environmental remediation from oyster restoration projects. Each credit quantifies specific pollutants removed from coastal waters β€” nitrogen, phosphorus, microplastics, and carbon.

Unlike traditional carbon offsets, Nutrient Credits are backed by real-time IoT sensor data, scientific methodology from NOAA, and immutable blockchain records. This creates a transparent, accountable system where polluters can offset their impact with verifiable results.

"Pollution is no longer free. It's time to clean up the mess you've made." β€” Adam Reiser, CEO

Types of Nutrient Credits

Nitrogen Credits (NRC)

Nitrogen removal prevents algal blooms and "dead zones" that suffocate marine life. Oysters filter nitrogen through their gills and incorporate it into shell and tissue.

Rate: 0.198 lbs N / 1,000 oysters / year

Phosphorus Credits (PRC)

Phosphorus removal improves water clarity and prevents toxic algae. Oysters bind phosphorus in their shells and filter it from the water column.

Rate: 0.022 lbs P / 1,000 oysters / year

Carbon Credits (CRC)

Oyster shells are 12% calcium carbonate, permanently sequestering CO2. Shell hash also provides substrate for new reef growth.

Rate: ~12% of shell mass as carbon

Microplastic Filtration

Each oyster filters 30-50 gallons per day, capturing microplastics, sediment, and particulates that damage marine ecosystems.

Rate: 30-50 gallons / oyster / day

How Nutrient Credits Work

1

Oyster Deployment

Partner with certified watermen and restoration organizations to deploy oyster bundles (10,000 oysters per bundle) in designated restoration zones. Each bundle is tagged with GPS coordinates and assigned a unique blockchain identifier.

2

IoT Monitoring

Solar-powered sensors continuously monitor water quality before and after oyster sites: nitrogen levels, phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, and turbidity. Data is TPM-signed and transmitted to the blockchain.

3

Credit Calculation

Using NOAA's Aquaculture Nutrient Removal Calculator and Chesapeake Bay Program methodology, we calculate verified nutrient removal based on oyster count, growth rate, and sensor data.

4

Blockchain Minting

Verified credits are minted as NC Tokens (ERC-1155) on Polygon, with full provenance data anchored to the record: site location, sensor readings, calculation methodology, and timestamp.

5

Trading & Retirement

Credits can be held, traded, or retired. Polluters purchase credits to offset their environmental impact. Retired credits are permanently burned with a public record of the offset.
